From Under the Cloud at Seven Steeples (2002, 2nd printng 2009) by Lucy Jane King, M.D. $18.00 (plus $4.00 S&H)
Dr. King, an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, has interpreted the story of Anna Agnew, a patient at Central State Hospital from 1878-1883. Agnew, who King describes as having suffered from bipolar disorder, lived for seven years in “seven steeples” (the Women’s Department of the hospital) and received care based on the “moral treatment” philosophy. When Agnew’s illness remitted, she left the hospital and wrote a book about her experiences. Using this book, King documents Anna Agnew’s experiences and the history of how the mentally ill have been treated and misunderstood.
